Reverberations… Still a significant impact on our reality Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) and his impact A Mechanical U niverse over Divine Providence Reason as counter to old customs of thought/institutional practice But dependence on reason was in itself just the same old thing new: (Plato/Aristotle) Medieval Christian rationality (adjusted by confidence and disclosure) Hence, the CONSTRAINTS of reason  restrictions inside a more extensive example of human resources Enlightenment  reason  learning  possibly boundless Reason no longer presuppose confidence/divine disclosure Man over Church/State/custom/tradition/capable individual/s Still obvious in present day popular governments even today: e.g., Alexis de Tocqueville

Locke John Locke (1632-1704) An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Two Treatises on Civil Government (1690) The psyche has no "innate thoughts" T abula rasa, or clear slate, on which we encounter Ideas for a fact ( sensatsion/reflection) Senses manage particular thoughts of articles particle outside world (yellow, white, hard, chilly or delicate) R eflection directs inner operation of our own personalities (discernment, considering, questioning, thinking and trusting) Sensations + Reflections = "the wellsprings of knowledge" No other wellspring of information or thoughts I nsistence on clear and unmistakable thoughts Blames the abuse or manhandle of dialect
